Till recently no emission spectrum of francium (an extremely rare radio-active element with atomic number 87) has been observed. Using laser spectroscopy with a swept wavelength laser source, and simultaneous observation of the signal from the atom detector, a first observation, requiring some hundreds of hours exposure has been made of a francium resonance by workers at CERN. The technique and its difficulties are discussed. (2 refs)
