Experimental data on the reaction pp to (p pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/)(p pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/), collected at the CERN intersecting storage rings using the split-field magnet facility, are reported. The strong signature of the reaction and the absence of neutrals provide efficient means for isolating a process with a cross section four orders of magnitude less than the total pp cross section, thus allowing a high energy double dissociation study. Data taken at ISR c.m.s. energies of 23, 31 and 53 GeV are presented. (8 refs)
