9. A case report of supra-condylar spur and its clinical correlation.

Introduction:-The Supracondylar spur was first to be described by a Scottish Anatomist, Sir John Struther. The Supracondylar spur is synonymous with the names like supra-epitrochlear, epicondylar, epicondylic process or a supratrochlear process. The Supracondylar spur is a hook like bony projection. The Supracondylar spur is of variable size. The Supracondylar spur projects distally from the anteromedial surface of the humerus. The Supracondylar spur is usually asymptotic but may be presented with the symptoms like median nerve and brachial artery compression. The compression symptoms include severe paraesthesia and hyperasthesia of hand and fingers, ischaemic pain of forearm, embolization of distal arm arteries and disappearance of radial or ulnar pulse on full extension and supination of forearm. In the case of higher division of the brachial artery while passing under the ligament of struthers’ the ulnar artery may get compressed along with median nerve. Case Report:- 535 dried human humeri were studied at the department of Anatomy, B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Bones wer examined for supraconylar spur. Its dimensions were recorded with Vernier calliper and photographs were taken. Result:-Out of 535 dried humeri, only one humerus of left side showed the presence of Supracondylar spur(0.18%). The length the Supracondylar spur was 0.3cm on anteromedial surface at a distance of 5.9cm from tip of medial epicondyle.Thebreadthofthespine of the Supracondylar spur at the base was found to be 1.4cm. The distance of the spine of the Supracondylar spur from the nutrient foramen was 3.6cm. Conclusion:-For many of who are not aware of its occasional presence, so it may be misdiagnosed as osteochondroma. It has potential for fracture and entrapment of median nerve, brachial artery or ulnar artery causing the Supracondylar process syndrome'. It should be considered in differential diagnosis of all cases presenting with pain and disturbance of sensibility of the forearm and hand
