Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2004.Includes bibliographical references.Noninvasive blood glucose monitoring has been long envisioned to serve as an invaluable tool in the treatment of diabetes. The current invasive method makes it difficult for diabetic patients to perform frequent blood glucose measurements and maintain better control of their glucose levels, crucial in reducing the risks of complications. In this thesis, the use of the near infrared absorption spectroscopy is proposed and investigated. The light radiation is envisioned to be transmitted through thin tissue such as the webbing tissue between the thumb and the index finger. The main technical difficulties are identi...
