Payne, 18 January 1863, written from Camp Nelson, Kentucky to his sister Mary Hills in Eagleville, Ohio. He describes the troops, Confederate prisoners and wounded of the camp and recounts his travels, including nights spent at the Louisville depot, a “Negro prison” in Lexington, and the court house in Nicholasville, Kentucky. He also describes the injury and death of a comrade at the Louisville depot after he fell under the troop rail car, originally used to transport hogs
