Aging skeletal muscle has a reduced capacity to regenerate from injury. Myogenic regulatory factors (MRFs) such as MyoD and myogenin are necessary for myoblast proliferation and differentiation, respectively, and are highly expressed at the onset of skeletal muscle regeneration.
