People brought flags of all sorts to carry in the parade. An old man limped as he paraded. "My feet hurt, but my heart don't," he shouted to spectators along the way. When peace was officially announced Governor Goodrich called on everyone who could to celebrate. The spirit of the city became carnival like. Trains and interurbans stopped, and factories and shops closed as everyone wanted to get downtown to celebrate. On and around Monument Circle people marched, sang, and shouted. Every noisemaking device possible was used including horns, bells, skillets, fire engines, cymbals, and cans. The celebration continued well into the night, eventually halted by fatigue
