The cornerstone was laid on the northeast corner of the monument on August 22, 1889. The cornerstone contained such items as a roster of Civil War soldiers from Indiana, newspapers, an American flag with thirty-eight stars, and the first (1816) and second (1851) Indiana constitutions. This image, ca. 1890, shows the progress of the construction several months after the cornerstone was laid. Scaffolding has been erected, and construction of the foundation has begun.Appears in Destination Indiana 6 Appears in Big Screen Journey Explore the Monumen
