South Bend had several baseball teams beginning in the 1860s. The Greenstockings were formed in 1878 with John Deacon as manager. The team sought sponsors to pay for uniforms. The response was so great that they were also able to build their own ballpark. In 1887 the team had its best season with a .730 percentage. In one of its last seasons, the team was invited to be a junior member of professional baseball in the Indiana State League in 1888
