The U.S.S. Indianapolis was commissioned November 15, 1932 at the Navy shipyard in Philadelphia. During the ceremony Captain J.M. Smeallie noted that the ship was a 15 million dollar insurance policy against war itself. The Indianapolis was the first of the heavy cruisers of the 1929 building program and would join the fleet on the west coast. In his prayer that day Chaplain C.A. Neyman, asked that God take the ship and crew into his care and make it effective in the defense of this country. This is an enlargement of C5942 from Box 3 Folder 16
