The modern sports hall – the functionalistic solution to the leisure time issue.

This is a degree project about sports halls from the 30´s and 40´s in Sweden. They are characterised by the arched roof of laminated beams from AB Fribärande Träkonstruktion. The work is based on an archive list from AB Fribärande Träkonstruktion, which is located in Töreboda. The list shows the cities and that years in which the gymnasiums were ordered. The current status of the sports halls has been investigated through exensive mail correspondence with the municipalities and museums in the regions mentioned in the list. It was after the exhibition Fritiden in Ystad 1936 that the functionalist architechture came to be spread in Sweden. During the 1900´s the sports movement grew and came to be deeply interwined with the Swedish identity. The essay examines how theses sports halls were distributed throughout Sweden. There is a relatively even distribution in central and southern Sweden, with the Töreboda factory strategically placed close to the centre. A comparison of the various drawings have also been conducted in order to investigate whether measurements were standardized or not. This comparision shows that the measurements only differ slightly from each other. The conclusion of this paper is that very few of these sports halls are seen as a part of the cultural heritage, mainly because of their relatively short history.
