SUMMARY This article highlights the importance of understanding the dynamics of commonality and conflicts of interest among women for researchers grass roots activists and policy makers. Women do not constitute a homogeneous category and class divisions as well as defferences arising from hierarchy in kinship networks may in certain contexts be crucial perimeters for both research and development project design.
