SUMMARY The nature of North?South collaboration on educational research is heavily influenced by the existence of external education aid projects in the Third World. Donors require evaluations of projects: they are torn between asking Third World researchers to carry out — and legitimate — this function, or First World researchers, because they want ‘objectivity’. In general, Third World researchers do not participate in transnational research on equal terms — they must be more involved in setting research agendas.
