James Abram Garfield was the only preacher ever to be elected president. He joined the Union army and eventually became a major general. He resigned in 1863 when he was elected to Congress from Ohio. He stayed there for seventeen years until he became president. He was assassinated, after serving only 200 days in office, on 2 July 1881 and died 19 September 1881
