Youthful Lincoln in two of his favorite avocations--reading and splitting rails.While growing up, Lincoln would take a book with him when he went about his work each day, just in case he had the chance to take a reading break. For example, he would sit down to read in a field while his horse rested. Hearing of this habit, some people thought Lincoln was lazy. But even after a long, tiring day, Lincoln would spend his evenings reading. He also would walk long distances to borrow books.
