Sherman recounts the milestones of the career of landscape painter Savage who is an important figure of early Canadian modernism. The author describes how the romantic and spiritual nature of her landscapes reflect a common desire amongst Canadian painters of that period (including the Group of Seven with whom she was affiliated) : to create a truly national painting style.
