Curator Jenkner discusses Duschenes’ series of four still lifes and four narrative paintings which incorporate texts (also reprinted in the catalogue). The author points to their allegorical nature and their critical relationship to the work of an earlier generation of Canadian realist painters (Chambers, Colville and Pratt). Jenkner also draws attention to various expressions of lesbian experience and ethnic difference (in the artist’s life and the public domain) as conveyed through the self-representations, objects, texts and spaces depicted.
