Car parking sometimes occupies as much as 40% of urban land, yet manages to go "expected but unnoticed". One of the places where provision is more or less compulsorily made for car storage is in the home. In an integration so ubiquitous as to be more or less invisible, purchasing a dwelling almost invariably entails purchasing infrastructure intended for - and in some cases legally restricted to - cars. This chapter explores some of the ways in which housing, car parking and thus car-based transport are bound together through embedded 20th century practices - materially, legally, and through the production and sale of housing
