Classical and Modern Physics

This course, together with Physics 102, will provide an introduction to physics appropriate for pre-health profession students and scientific age citizens. My aim is to provide you with:\ud • Knowledge of the principles and methods of physics;\ud • Understanding of how those principles and methods relate to\ud reality;\ud • Ability to apply and communicate the principles and methods of\ud physics;\ud • Appreciation of scientific and analytic thinking.\ud How scientists see the world.†\ud Consistent with the focus on pre-health, many of the examples, applications, and problems will be drawn from biology.‡ Suzanne Amador Kane (samador@haverford.edu, L103) is our resident biophysicist and go-to person for your deep burning questions about physics and biology.\ud Ernest Rutherford wrote that “all of physics is either impossible or trivial. It is impossible until you understand it, and then it becomes trivial.” And you can understand it – as T. H. Huxley observed, science is just “trained and organized common sense.
