Chamberlain answers questions from his family. He has enough money and his clothes are lasting. Lately they have been eating hard tack, beef, vegetables and coffee. He notes that 120 soldiers are in the hospital, as many as it can hold.James Chamberlain taught school briefly in Richland, Ohio. He later entered Western Reserve Medical College in Cleveland and graduated from which he graduated in 1849. He moved to DeKalb County, Indiana in 1853. From 1860-1862, he served as DeKalb County sheriff. He enlisted in the Union Army in April 1865 and was commissioned a surgeon with the 152nd Indiana Regiment
