James C. Alden resided in Milan, Indiana when he was mustered in as a sergeant in Company B, 52nd Indiana Infantry in February, 1862. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant in September, 1862, and transferred to quartermaster as part of the regiment’s field and staff in April, 1865. He mustered out in September, 1865. This letter was written by Alden while he was at Fort Pillow, Tennessee. It was addressed to his wife, Jemima and in it he discussed sending money and goods to her.2011.008
