Born in Woodford County, Kentucky, John Buford graduated from West Point in 1847. In 1861, at the beginning of the war he was a captain with the Second Cavalry; he was promoted several times and by 1863 achieved the rank of major general. He played a key role in the opening of the Battle of Gettysburg. He died of typhoid on 16 December 1863.0000.054
