This article examines the education system in South Africa during the current crucial stage in which the apartheid legislation is being dismantled and in which a new society is being designed. The enormous discrepancy in provision between black and white schooling, the difference in curricula and the confusing multiplicity of racial education departments, are cited as the main problems. The dominant ideologies in schooling are examined and some suggestions are made in the light of the fact that a mild democratic socialism will prevail in a future South African dispensation.
