Two methods of determining the fractional crystallinity of pulp materials containing lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose have been investigated. X-ray diffraction is able to give a clear indication of the relative fractional crystallinity by making the simple assumption that the diffractogram is a combination of a broad halo from the amorphous regions and sharp diffraction peaks from a highly crystalline regions. Although no quantitative data was obtained from solid state C-13 NMR spectra components were clearly identified from the amorphous and crystalline regions of cellulose in the pulps
