Luvena Dethridge began her formal musical education around 1927 under the direction of Samuel B. Garton at the Garton Studios of Dramatic Art, Music, and Dancing. Previously he taught in the music department of Earlham College. His wife, Genette Kramer Garton, an organist and pianist, would often serve as Dethridge’s accompanist. As the Gartons’ protegee, Dethridge twice went with them to Italy to study – in 1928 and 1930. On one trip, she sang in a concert on the steamer ship on the way to Europe.Destination Indiana - Luvena Wallace Dethridge, Lyric Soprano Journe
