Poliomyelitis was an acute viral infection that affected mostly children and some adults. The virus entered the body through the mouth and invaded the bloodstream. It sometimes caused lesions on the gray matter of the spinal cord and brain often resulting in paralysis. About 25 percent of patients with paralysis had severe permanent disabilities, 25 percent had mild disabilities, and 50 percent recovered without paralysis.Use of this image is restricted to projects related to Destination Indiana.
