The history of the Underground Railroad interests people from the casual observer to the serious researcher. The public has become engaged with the topic through preservation, research, literature, and educational programming. In 1998, the Indiana Historical Society staff took 24 students (grades 7 through 12) and nine adults to several sites in southern Indiana, Ft. Wayne, Detroit, and Canada to explore the history of the UGRR.
