Nov. 7, 1918, rumors reached the U.S. that the Germans had signed the armistice terms delivered by Marshall Foch, ending WWI. Celebrations broke out in cities across the country. Newspapers published extra editions. The rumors were later declared erroneous; no armistice had been signed. Officials stated nothing except an official dispatch should be believed.
