Background: Accumulating evidence suggests that hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis) is involved in depression. 11β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) converts inert cortisone to active cortisol and is implicated in HPA axis regulation in animal studies.
