Immune cells are key players in several physiological and pathophysiological events such as acute and chronic inflammation, atherosclerosis and cancer. Especially in acute inflammation, macrophages are indispensable for the switch from the acute inflammatory phase to the resolution phase. Not only the phagocytosis of apoptotic cells, but especially the surrounding cytokines and mediators are able to switch macrophage polarization from inflammatory- to anti-inflammatory phenotypes.
