Flowering is a crucial step in plant development that needs to be carefully regulated to occur at the right time of the year, thus ensuring reproductive success. In Arabidopsis thaliana, several interconnected molecular networks have been disclosed that mediate flowering response to environmental cues, such as photoperiod and temperature, or to endogenous factors, such as plant age or hormones. Many of these signalling pathways are systemic, i.e. involve regulatory mechanisms distant from the shoot apical meristem where floral transition eventually occurs.
