Le chaos : des questions théoriques aux enjeux sociaux. Philosophie, épistémologie, histoire et impact sur les institutions (1880-2000)

Between 1975 and 1982 a new field of research developed around the numerous conceptions of chaos, leading progressively to a selection and the elaboration of the theories of chaos of the 1980's. In the perspective of social and intellectual history, the confrontation between differing viewpoints on chaos (particularly those of D. Ruelle, O. Rössler and R. Shaw) and the analysis of "scenarios of transition to chaos" highlight the conceptual and technical variety brought into play. The impetus for this goes back to the end of the 19th century at the crossing of the mathematical innovations of Poincaré and celestial mechanics within the context of philosophical debates on chance, determinism and instability, in relationship to the nascence of statistical mechanics. From 1900 up to the present time, the development of the notions of chaos is multi-sided. On the conceptual level, the mathematics of dynamic systems and the development of ideas relative to the foundations of statistical mechanics, ergodicity and instability have played a major role, whilst changes in scientific practice have been equally important. Reasoning by analogy and analogical calculation, the use of the computer in mathematics, physics and chemistry are subjected to an epistemological analysis indicating their relative importance to this development. In a social-institutional perspective, the analysis of the impact of this evolution on the CNRS allows us to estimate the stakes involved, both scientific and social. We conclude with the historical status of the notions of chaos.Entre 1975 et 1982 un nouveau champ de recherche se construit autour de multiples conceptions de chaos, conduisant progressivement à une sélection dans cette diversité et à l'élaboration de théories du chaos pour les années 80. Dans une perspective d'histoire intellectuelle et sociale, la confrontation de différents regards sur le chaos (ceux de D. Ruelle, O. Rössler et R. Shaw en particulier), et l'analyse des "scénarios de transition vers le chaos" mettent en évidence la variété technique et conceptuelle à l'œuvre. Les origines de cet élan remontent à la fin du XIXème siècle, au carrefour des innovations mathématiques de H. Poincaré et de la mécanique céleste, dans un contexte de débats philosophiques sur le hasard, le déterminisme et l'instabilité, en rapport avec la mécanique statistique naissante. De 1900 à nos jours, le développement des notions de chaos montre une multitude de facettes. Au niveau conceptuel, les mathématiques des systèmes dynamiques et l'évolution des idées relatives aux fondements de la mécanique statistique, à l'ergodicité et à l'instabilité, ont joué un rôle majeur. Les changements dans les pratiques scientifiques ont été tout aussi déterminants. Le raisonnement par analogie et le calcul analogique, l'utilisation de l'ordinateur en mathématiques, en physique et en chimie font l'objet d'une analyse épistémologique précisant leur importance dans ce développement. Dans une perspective socio-institutionnelle, l'analyse de l'impact de ces évolutions sur le CNRS permet d'estimer le poids respectif des enjeux tant scientifiques que sociaux. Nous concluons sur le statut historique des notions de chaos
