Between 1975 and 1982 a new field of research developed around the numerous conceptions of chaos, leading progressively to a selection and the elaboration of the theories of chaos of the 1980's. In the perspective of social and intellectual history, the confrontation between differing viewpoints on chaos (particularly those of D. Ruelle, O. Rössler and R. Shaw) and the analysis of "scenarios of transition to chaos" highlight the conceptual and technical variety brought into play.
