Since the fundamental work by Bendsøe and Kikuchi (1988), topology optimization has been based on compliance type formulations (Bendsoe & Sigmund, 2003) while the number of works considering stress constraints are rather limited (Duysinx & Bendsoe, 1998). More recently the generalized shape optimization approach using level set methods (see for instance Allaire, Jouve, Troader, 2004, Belytchko, Xiao, Parimi, 2003) has followed the tracks of topology optimization and has mainly been focusing on compliance minimization problems.
