The teaching of crafts in the city of Rio Grande (1889-1930): an analysis of devalidated childhood.

This doctoral thesis is dedicated to analyzing the handicrafts teaching to the destitute children, in the city of Rio Grande, during the First Republic. In this period education was seen as essential to the consolidation of the government system. Thus, it is believed that the education of rio-grandina underprivileged through asylum institutions, with a preventive profile, aimed to crafts teaching was a way to fight against marginalization and the mismatch of a less favored class, which increased through the Urbanization process. To carry out this research we sought a theoretical-methodological reference based on Cultural History and in the following categories: positivism, school institutions, school culture, crafts teaching, underprivileged childhood and Catholic education. The sources were newspapers and official documents. The study shows that the Rio-Grandense Republican Party strengthened in the state and had many supporters in the city of Rio Grande. Public servants, lawyers, doctors, politicians, merchants and other elite subjects were appointed as members of the Sul-Rio-Grandense Positivist Cooperative Club. In addition to that they constituted the local powers, that is, those who, together, could act directly in the socio-cultural, economic and political relations in the Rio Grande community. Their focus was on order, sanitation, and the progress of the city. At the same time, the Church, in reaction to its separation from the state, increased the number of dioceses, parishes, seminaries and schools. At the same time, it received various congregations from Europe to work in educational, health and welfare missions. Its goal was the spread of the Catholic faith and reconquer its place of power and influence within politics, culture, economy and so on. It was found, therefore, that local authorities as well as the Catholic Church needed, imputed by the republican context, to find ways to validate their socio-cultural projects. This aspect resulted, from convenience agreements, in the foundation of asylum institutions, in the city of Rio Grande, for prevention and inculcation of disciplines and civilizations values which aimed such social organization.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESEsta tese de doutoramento dedica-se à análise do ensino de ofícios destinado à infância desvalida, na cidade do Rio Grande, durante a Primeira República. Nesse recorte temporal, a educação era vista como essencial à consolidação do sistema de governo. Assim, acredita-se que a instrução da infância desvalida rio-grandina, por meio de instituições asilares, de perfil preventivo, voltadas ao ensino de ofícios, foi uma medida de combate à marginalização e ao descompasso de uma camada menos favorecida, que aumentava em decorrência de um processo crescente de urbanização. Para a realização desta pesquisa, buscou-se um referencial teórico-metodológico embasado na História Cultural e nas categorias positivismo, instituições escolares, cultura escolar, ensino de ofícios, infância desvalida e educação católica. As fontes analisadas, foram jornais e documentos oficiais. O estudo evidencia que, o Partido Republicano Rio-Grandense fortaleceu-se no estado e teve muitos adeptos na cidade do Rio Grande. Funcionários públicos, advogados, médicos, políticos, comerciantes e outros sujeitos da elite, foram apontados como membros do Club Cooperador Positivista Sul-Rio-Grandense. Mas, para além, esses constituíam os poderes locais, ou seja, aqueles que, juntos, conseguiam atuar diretamente nas relações socioculturais, econômicas e políticas na comunidade rio-grandina. O foco desses, era a ordem, a higienização, e o progresso da cidade. Paralelamente, a Igreja, em reação à sua separação do Estado, aumentava o número de dioceses, de paróquias, de seminários e de escolas. Ao mesmo tempo em que recebia diversas congregações vindas da Europa, para trabalhar nas missões educacionais, de saúde e de assistência social. Sua meta era a disseminação da fé católica e a reconquista do seu lugar de poder e de influência dentro da política, da cultura, da economia e etc. Constatou-se assim, que tanto os poderes locais, como a Igreja Católica necessitavam, imputados pelo contexto republicano, encontrar meios para validar os seus projetos socioculturais. Tal aspecto resultou, a partir de acordos de conveniências, na fundação de instituições de ofícios de cunho asilar, na cidade do Rio Grande, para a prevenção e inculcação de valores, disciplinadores e civilizatórios, que objetivavam uma dada organização social
