Distribution model of Anastrepha grandis: Projections for new territories and future scenarios

Pumpkin fly, Anastrepha grandis (Macquart, 1846) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is the most important cucurbit-infested fly in South America. Understanding the potential distribution areas of that specie may help in monitoring and control strategies in regions where the fly would find conditions of environmental suitability for its establishment. Species distribution modeling makes it possible to predict where and under what conditions a species might occur. Understanding how the geographic distribution of the species may occur in different scenarios allows for greater predictability in control strategies in different regions and in different climate scenarios, as can occur if climate change predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is confirmed. The aim of this work was to model the potential distributions of the fly in two types of approaches, one in relation to areas where the fly does not yet occur outside South America, and the other focusing on predictive distribution in climate change scenarios. The results suggest that the fly may settle in various areas of high and medium suitability on all continents, especially in regions such as central Africa, Southeast Asia and Australia. But it also currently finds adequate conditions in areas in the southern United States and the Iberian Peninsula in the northern hemisphere. If areas of low suitability are considered, the number of locations that could be invaded would increase. In climate change scenarios, the fly has its distribution generally favored by changes in all scenarios and although it may lose some of today's potential territory ranges, it will still maintain stable distribution current areas with greater gain in the new areas available mainly in the already favorable regions of the world and regions towards the poles. In this sense, it is concluded that A. grandis is able to disperse and colonize new environments outside its native range, including in regions where it is considered quarantine, and like other tephritids will benefit from climate change that will increase the area suitable for its establishment.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESA mosca-da-abóbora, Anastrepha grandis (Macquart, 1846) (Diptera: Tephritidae) é a mais importante mosca que infesta cucurbitáceas na América do Sul. Compreender as áreas de distribuição potencial da espécie pode ajudar em estratégias de monitoramento e controle em regiões onde a mosca encontraria condições de adequabilidade ambiental para o seu estabelecimento. A modelagem de distribuição de espécie possibilita prever onde e em quais condições uma espécie pode ocorrer. Entender como a distribuição geográfica da espécie pode ocorrer em diferentes cenários permite maior poder de previsibilidade em estratégias de controle nas diferentes regiões e em diferentes cenários climáticos, como o que pode ocorrer se mudanças no clima previstos pelo Painel Intergovernamental sobre Mudanças Climáticas se confirmarem. O objetivo desse trabalho foi modelar as distribuições potenciais da mosca em dois tipos de abordagens, uma em relação as áreas onde a mosca ainda não ocorre fora da América do Sul, e outra com foco em distribuição preditiva nos cenários de mudança climática. Os resultados sugerem que a mosca pode se estabelecer em várias áreas de alta e média adequabilidade em todos os continentes, principalmente em regiões como o centro da África, sudeste asiático e Austrália. Mas também encontra atualmente condições adequadas em áreas no sul dos Estados Unidos e na Península Ibérica no hemisfério norte. Se forem consideradas as áreas de baixa adequabilidade o número de localidades que podem ser invadidas aumentaria. Em cenários de mudanças climáticas, a mosca tem sua distribuição favorecida em geral pelas mudanças em todos os cenários e embora possa perder algumas faixas de território hoje potenciais, ainda manterá áreas estáveis de distribuição com ganho maior nas novas áreas disponíveis principalmente nas regiões já favoráveis no presente e regiões em direção aos polos. Nesse sentido conclui-se que A. grandis tem condições de dispersar e colonizar novos ambientes fora de sua faixa nativa, inclusive em regiões onde é considerada quarentenária, e a exemplo de outros tefritídeos será beneficiada com mudanças climáticas que aumentarão a área adequada para seu estabelecimento
