Expectant mothers with vaginal infection in a health district of the municipality of Guanabacoa, Havana

Background: vaginal infection in pregnancy is one of the main health problems that directly influence the development of pregnancy and childbirth.Objective: to characterize the pregnant women with vaginal infection belonging to the health district of the “Andrés Ortiz” University Polyclinic of Guanabacoa, Havana, Cuba, from June 2018 to June 2019.Methods: a descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out with 155 pregnant women of the aforementioned health area and during the period herein declared. The information was gathered from the individual medical records. The main variables measured were: maternal age, causal germ, cervical modifications, pregnancy trimester and more frequent prenatal and postnatal complications.Results: vaginal infection predominated in 102 patients (65,8 %), the 26 to 30 age group was the most represented one with 44 cases (28,38 %), cervical modifications were present in 66 patients (42,58 %), the most frequent causal germ was Gardnerella vaginalis in 39 patients (25,16 %) and the p-value was <0,00. Vaginal infection in the first trimester of pregnancy was more common, with 64 patients (64 %). Premature rupture of membranes was present in 46 patients (29,67 %).Conclusions: the expectant mothers included in the study were characterized, with a prevalence of vaginal infection. Premature rupture of membranes was the most represented complication.
