The term "screenplay" has been defined in this article. Lexicographical interpretation and origin of the term "screenplay" according to various lexicographical sources has been studied. Common and distinctive features of the terms "script" and "film script" have been distinguished. Views of the linguists on researching of cinematography as a combination of verbal and non-verbal means of expression have been studied. Verbal and nonverbal expression plans of the film script have been investigated. Signs that serve linguistic (signs-symbols) and non-linguistic systems of the movie (signs-codes and signs-icons) have been analyzed.
