This article discusses Sundanese textiles in the pre-Islamic period, as they are depicted in Old Sundanese texts. Precolonial sources from the Sundanese speaking region are studied in terms of their connection to textiles (in particular woven textiles), including features to do with the relevant activities, instruments, colours, motifs and the spiritual aspects behind that exclusively female occupation. Because the formulaic aspects of Old Sundanese texts are often associated with archaic expressions found in traditional Sundanese epic narratives (carita pantun), especially in illustrations of weaving, such sources from the oral tradition will also be used, in order to obtain a clearer picture of the weaving traditions.Cet article traite de...
