Between Modern and National Education: The ‘Ajam Schools of Bahrain and Kuwait

In the first decades of the 20th century, Islamic modernist discourse inspired very local transformations in education across the Middle East and Indian Ocean. As Gulf merchants returned from their oceanic travels, they brought back ideas for instituting “modern” education in the port towns of the Arabian Peninsula. The initial goals were not necessarily nationalist or even Arabist. Rather they were an attempt to provide education that would teach new, necessary skills in a modern, systematic environment while upholding traditional Islamic identities. While modern education has been understood primarily as a project undertaken by the Arab merchants of the region, this article demonstrates that the “‘Ajam” schools of Bahrain and Kuwait were initially a part of the same conversation. Tracing the early history of their development in the 1910s and 1920s through to the 1930s, I illuminate the initial orientation of the schools and how they responded to the influence of the Iranian modernist‑nationalist state project.Dans les premières décennies du XXe siècle, le discours moderniste islamique a donné lieu à des transformations du secteur éducatif au Moyen-Orient et dans l'océan Indien. Au retour de leurs voyages transocéaniques, les marchands du Golfe ont apporté avec eux des idées pour mettre en place un enseignement « moderne » dans les villes portuaires de la péninsule Arabique. Les objectifs initiaux n'étaient pas nécessairement nationalistes, ni même arabistes. Il s'agissait plutôt pour eux d’aider à développer, par l’enseignement, les compétences nécessaires à l’intégration dans un environnement moderne et organisé, tout en maintenant les identités islamiques traditionnelles. Alors que la mise en place de l'éducation moderne a jusqu’ici principalement été présentée comme étant l’œuvre de marchands arabes de la région, cet article démontre que les écoles « ‘Ajam » de Bahreïn et du Koweït ont très tôt été parties prenantes de ce mouvement. En retraçant les débuts de leur développement dans les années 1910 et 1920 jusqu'aux années 1930, l’auteur éclaire l'orientation initiale de ces écoles et la façon dont elles ont répondu à l'influence du projet moderniste et nationaliste de l’État iranien.في العقود الاولى من القرن العشرين، ساهم الخطاب الحداثي الاسلامي في حصول تحولات موضعية في التعليم في منطقة الشرق الاوسط والمحيط الهندي، فقد حمل التجار عند عودتهم من رحلاتهم البحرية افكارا تؤسس لتعليم "حديث" في موانئ الجزيرة العربية، ولم تكن الاهداف الاولى من ذلك قومية بالضرورة ولا حتى بهدف التعريب، بل كانت بالأحرى محاولة لتقديم تعليم يعطي مهارات جديدة وضرورية في بيئة حديثة ومنهجية مع التمسك يالهويات الاسلامية التقليدية. وفي حين عرف التعليم الحديث بشكل رئيسي كمشروع بدأه تجار المنطقة العرب، يوضح هذا المقال ان مدارس عجم البحرين والكويت كانت في البداية جزءا من هذا التحول، وعند تتبعي لبدايات تطورها في السنوات 1910 و1920 وحتى 1930، يتضح التوجه الأولي للمدارس وطريقة تجاوبها مع تأثير مشروع الدولة الحداثية القومية الايرانية
