Cette étude a comme objectif de mieux comprendre le lien entre le roman Howards End de E. M. Forster (1910) et l’adaptation filmique de James Ivory (1992) en regardant de plus près le scénario écrit par Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. Si Jhabvala et Ivory cherchaient tous les deux à remanier des éléments du roman afin de trouver un nouvel équilibre plus en phase avec le public d’aujourd’hui, le scénariste et le réalisateur avaient cependant une vision et un plan bien distincts. Jhabvala a conçu un cadrage structurel mettant en avant une intrigue en trois actes et trois personnages transcendants tirés de trois classes sociales, tout en renforçant des discours de lutte sociale et de féminisme tirés du roman.
