To date, with some notable exceptions, scholarship has presented the passing from the Classical to the Hellenistic period in Cyprus in a summary way, usually in order to state that this was the beginning of a process during which Cypriot art and culture in general lost their individuality. This was attributed to the fact that the island came to form part of a large koine – a process that was completed with the arrival of the Romans. This passage, however, was a much more complex event than usually assumed. The whole administrative structure of Cyprus changed dramatically: from an island consisting of a number of competing autonomous kingdom-polities, it became a single entity governed by a foreign ruler.
