In the later medieval period, Italians took the lead in establishing commercial and other relations between western Europe and Asia, including the Indian sub-continent. This was particularly true of the high “Mongol” epoch, the century from about 1250 to 1350, but it remained the case even later to some extent. These included the Venetians, but especially the Genoese, who were at the time at the height of their power and ambitions. However, with the opening of the Cape Route in the late fifteenth century, it was the Portuguese who took the lead, and the Italians came to occupy a rather secondary role.
