The challenges of institutionalization of musical knowledge

Modern music institutions have ensured the permanence and renewal of musical practices and have on a broader basis fostered artistic creation. The development of music institutions and the crucial role they have played in the recent history of a great number of music traditions call for a transversal and anthropological reflection. Institutionalization generates an ensemble of processes that directly impact musical knowledge: it contributes to the redefinition of the social and geographical spaces of a given practice or repertoire. By focusing on the journey of a given practice or of a musical category, the authors of this special issue give evidence of the multiplicity of music contexts and the imbrication of institutions in different temporal and territorial scales. They also underline the agency of actors with regards to the coexistence and overlapping of socio-musical institutions. While the institutional context defines a performance space with a status that fluctuates in time and in the musical field, the dynamics generated by the interpenetration of different models of musical socialization draw a complex musical landscape with moving boundaries.Les institutions musicales modernes ont participé à la pérennisation et au renouvellement de certaines pratiques musicales et favorisé, plus largement, la création artistique. Leur prolifération et leur rôle déterminant dans l’histoire récente d’un grand nombre de traditions musicales invitent à une réflexion anthropologique transversale. Le processus d’institutionnalisation engendre un ensemble de transformations qui affectent directement les savoirs musicaux : il participe à la redéfinition de l’espace social et géographique d’un genre ou d’un répertoire. En s’attachant au cheminement d’une pratique circonscrite ou d’une catégorie musicale, les auteurs de ce dossier témoignent de la multiplicité des contextes musicaux et de l’inscription des institutions dans différentes échelles temporelles et territoriales. Ils soulignent, en parallèle, la capacité d’action des acteurs face à la coexistence et la superposition d’institutions socio-musicales. Alors que le cadre institutionnel délimite un espace de performance au statut oscillant dans le temps et dans le champ musical, les dynamiques engendrées par l’interpénétration des différents modèles de socialisations musicales dessinent un paysage musical complexe aux frontières mouvantes.Las instituciones musicales modernas han participado en la perpetuación y la renovación de ciertas prácticas musicales y, más ampliamente, han favorecido la creación artística. Su proliferación y su función decisiva en la historia reciente de muchas tradiciones musicales invitan a una reflexión antropológica transversal. La institucionalización genera un conjunto de procesos que afectan directamente la música y participa en la redefinición del espacio social y geográfico de una práctica o de un repertorio. Al centrarse en el transcurso de una práctica circunscrita o de una categoría musical, los autores de este número dan testimonio de la multiplicidad de los contextos musicales y de la inclusión de las instituciones a diferentes niveles temporales y territoriales. Los autores subrayan igualmente la capacidad de acción de los actores frente a la coexistencia y a la superposición de las instituciones socio-musicales. Si bien el contexto institucional delimita un espacio de acción que oscila entre el tiempo y el campo musical, las dinámicas generadas por la interpenetración de diferentes modelos de socializaciones musicales dibujan un panorama musical complejo con fronteras movedizas
