Can we attribute the middle Neolithic in the Scheldt and middle Meuse basins to the Michelsberg Culture?

Cette contribution présente l’information disponible pour évaluer le Néolithique moyen des bassins de l’Escaut et de la Meuse. On propose la dénomination du Groupe de Spiere comme nouvelle entité du Néolithique moyen dans la région. Les différentes entités culturelles devraient être considérées comme des développements régionaux, en interaction constante avec les régions avoisinantes.This contribution deals with the archaeological data that is available to characterise the middle Neolithic in the Scheldt and middle Meuse basins. In spite of the scarcity of large assemblages, we are able to identify the Group of Spiere as a new entity covering the area of present day southwest Belgium and northwest France. Moreover, we argue that the different identified cultural entities should be regarded as regionally developed in a constant interaction with people occupying neighbouring areas
