From the Qur’an to Christianity

The focus of the paper is a study of cultural and linguistic contact in West Africa, especially in the domain of religion. Through an analysis of historical layers of some Arabic borrowings in three languages of the region, Manding, Kpelle and Mano, as well as social contexts in which language contact and vocabulary transmission may have occurred, the paper presents a reconstruction of the way Arabic lexicon came to shape Christian (and especially Catholic) lexicon of Kpelle and Mano. This study argues that the influence of Islam on Christianity should be accounted for not only in terms of synchronic influence, but also in terms of influence on pre-Christian religious practice, some aspects of which have later been incorporated into the Christian practice. The paper provides evidence for the key role of the missionaries’ translation techniques in shaping the religious lexicon, and at the same time emphasizes the importance of local interethnic dynamics and language contact.Cet article porte sur le contact linguistique et culturel en Afrique de l’Ouest, surtout dans le domaine de la religion. En analysant les couches historiques de quelques mots d’emprunt de l’arabe dans trois langues locales — le manding, le kpellé et le mano — ainsi que les contextes sociaux dans lesquels le contact linguistique et la transmission du vocabulaire auraient pu avoir lieu, cette recherche présente une reconstruction des moyens par lesquels le lexique arabe a pu façonner le lexique chrétien (et surtout catholique) des Kpellé et des Mano. Cette étude soutient que l’influence de l’islam sur le christianisme devrait être prise en compte non seulement en termes d’influence synchronique, mais aussi d’influence sur les pratiques religieuses préchrétiennes dont certains aspects se sont plus tard incorporés dans le rite chrétien. Cet article démontre le rôle-clé des missionnaires, notamment de leurs techniques de traduction dans la formation du lexique religieux, tout en soulignant l’importance des dynamiques locales inter-ethniques et du contact linguistique
