During the Enlightenment, Europeans devised elaborate theories that defined and demarcated European identity from that of other, non-European peoples. Unlike fixed, hereditary attributes such as blood and genetics that were the primary indicators of racial identity in the late nineteenth century, during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Europeans constructed notions of human difference based on a range of overlapping categories. Many of these elements were seemingly fluid and subjective, including education, language, religious affiliation, civility, manners, and dress.
