Mapping Gender Issues in Islam through the Views of Muhammadiyah/‘Aisyiyah Members in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

‘Aisyiyah is the female wing of Muhammadiyah, one of the two largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia. Within the organization, Muslim female intellectuals defend different visions of gender issues in Islam. Some interpret religious texts literally while others interpret them contextually. This research maps contentious gender issues in Islam as perceived by Muslim gender scholars affiliated to ‘Aisyiyah and its mother organization. Through its extensive network of schools dedicated to educating and raising awareness of women on religious issues, the organization has been able to influence religious discourse in Indonesia. ‘Aisyiyah was founded with the goal of achieving religious purification and the emancipation of women. Among the women who have studied in this organization, some claim to be Islamic feminists. Through their struggle, they revisit the interpretation of religious texts in order to defend the rights of Muslim women.‘Aisyiyah est la branche féminine de Muhammadiyah, l’une des deux plus grandes organisations islamiques en Indonésie. Au sein de cette organisation, les femmes intellectuelles musulmanes défendent des positions différentes sur les problématiques de genre. Certaines interprètent les textes religieux d’une manière littérale tandis que d’autres les appliquent selon le contexte. A travers le prisme des intellectuelles musulmanes affiliées à ‘Aisyiyah ainsi qu’à son organisation mère, cette recherche a pour objectif de mettre en exergue les points de controverse autour du genre que soulèvent les textes religieux. Grâce à son vaste réseau d’écoles dédié à l’éducation et à la sensibilisation des femmes sur les questions religieuses, l’organisation est parvenue à influencer le discours religieux en Indonésie. A travers un discours qui se veut émancipateur, ‘Aisyiyah a été fondée dans le but de mettre en œuvre le projet d’une société éduquée à la pureté religieuse. Parmi les femmes qui ont étudié au sein de cette organisation, certaines se revendiquent du féminisme islamique. A travers leurs combats, elles revisitent les interprétations des textes sacrés, dans le but de défendre les droits des femmes musulmanes.العائشية هي الفرع النسائي للمحمدية أحد أكبر منظمتين إسلامتين في اندونسيا، تدافع النساء المثقفات داخل هذه المنظمة عن مواقف مختلفة حول إشكاليات النوع الاجتماعي بعضهن يفسر النصوص الدينية بشكل حرفي بينما البعض الآخر يفسره وفقاً للسياق من منظور المثقفات المسلمات المنتسبات للعائشية وكذلك المنظمة الأم يهدف هذا البحث الى تسليط الضوء على النقاط الخلافية حول مسألة النوع الإجتماعي التي تثيرها النصوص الدينية، بفضل شبكتها الواسعة من مدارس النساء المخصصة للتربية والتوعية بالمسائل الدينية تمكنت المنظمة من التأثير على الخطاب الديني في إندونيسيا. ومن خلال خطاب يقدم نفسه على انه خطاب مُحرر تأسست العائشية بهدف تطبيق مشروع مجتمع تربى على الطهارة الدينية. وبعض السيدات اللاتي يدرسن داخل هذه المنظمة يقدمن انفسهن على انهن ينتمين الى النسوية الإسلامية. ومن خلال نضالهن يراجعن تفسيرات النصوص المقدسة بهدف الدفاع عن حقوق المرأة المسلمة
