The provisional results of the Census of India 2001 showed a substantial decline in the sex ratio in the age group 0-6 years. This distressing state of affairs gave rise to grave concern across all sections of society. It set into motion serious debates and resulted in a series of actions on several fronts to curb the menace of female foeticide in certain parts of the country.The census of 2001 has revealed some interesting and worrying features with regard to sex ratios.
