Presents and Tribute: Exploration of the Presents Given to the Qianlong Emperor by the British Macartney EmbassyIn 1793, the British government sent a major diplomatic mission to China led by Lord Macartney. According to past interpretations of this, these presents received the full attention of neither the Qianlong emperor nor his court officials.
