I "American studies" in the United Kingdom have a long tradition. The name itself is misleading, however, since in the U.K. it has usually refereed to the study of the United States. With a few exceptions Canada tends to be left out: together with other former British possessions in the Caribbean and the mainland, it had been integrated into studies of the Commonwealth, though Canadian Studies also took a path of its own since the 1970s .
